•The roads in the game reserve are gravel. There are also inclines, and certain parts of the game drive can be bumpy. This program is not recommended for guests with back problems.

•This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties due to visits to remote regions of Africa where climbing in and out of safari vehicles is required and sometimes walking on uneven surfaces will be required. This program will also involve extended periods (3+ hours) in a vehicle on rugged terrain.

  • OVERLAND - KRUGER & LUKIMBI SAFARI (DUR-MPM) 2023 CODE: DURL24

Head into the bush on several game drives, looking for all the iconic African wildlife in Kruger National Park, where you will stay at the luxury Lukimbi Safari Lodge.

Lukimbi is one of only 7 private concessions within Kruger National Park, and at 15 000 hectares is one of the largest. Located in the southern section of the park, it is bounded by 3 major river systems and offers a diverse array of habitats, including grasslands, wooded thickets, savannahs, drainage lines, dry riverbeds, rolling hills and lush riverine thickets. A healthy abundance of wildlife – including the Big Five and a host of other animals big and small finds home here.

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

    DAY 1:

Upon disembarkation in Durban, you will be met by an English-speaking tour guide who will accompany you on the road transfer to Durban International Airport.

After the flight from Durban to Nelspruit, you will be met by another English-speaking guide and transferred by road to Lukimbi Safari Lodge, which is located within Kruger National Park.

The largest game reserve in South Africa, Kruger National Park was established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African lowveld. This is the land of baobabs, fever trees, knob thorns, marula and mopane trees, and home to the legendary Big Five—buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino.

It is also inhabited by the Little Five—buffalo weaver, elephant shrew, leopard tortoise, ant lion and rhino beetle, and the birding Big Six—ground hornbill, kori bustard, lappet-faced vulture, martial eagle, Pel’s fishing owl and saddle-bill stork— and more species of mammals than any other African game reserve.

Check in and take some time to acquaint yourself with the lodge.

Your Classic Suite will occupy its own elevated position overlooking the bush and has been designed to magnify the view. Private shaded decks, cathedral styled windows, floor-to-ceiling glass in front of great stone bathtubs, and open outdoor showers promise ample opportunity to fully appreciate and be one with the wilderness. These suites include generous open space, 200 thread count linen, feather pillows (micro fibre pillows available on request), deluxe amenities and an in-room refreshment centre (including beverages and a selection of snacks).

Enjoy an afternoon game drive followed by dinner around a roaring boma fire under the stars.

At Lukimbi, no more than 7 people are allocated to an open shaded safari vehicle, which means that every passenger has a window seat and a Lukimbi safari is a unique take on a traditional Kruger National Park safari in that vehicles are permitted to traverse off-road under strictly controlled conditions.

    DAY 2:

Hot and cold beverages will be waiting for you after your early morning wake-up call. You will then set off on a game drive that once again showcases the wildlife and nature of the southern region of Kruger National Park.

Following the early-morning safari, you will return to the lodge for a leisurely lunch and some free time.

In addition to the excellent Big Five game viewing, other activities include guided River and Bush Walks for those who want their feet on the ground for a fresh perspective on an interactive walking safari.

Perhaps use the spa or gym facilities, the pool which is located right on the bank of the Lwakahle River or book a round of golf - Leopard Creek Golf Course borders the Kruger National Park and is located just an hour away from Lukimbi. Additional charges will apply to certain optional activities. A complete list of available options will be provided while you are on site and can be booked directly with the lodge.

By late afternoon you will head out on another game drive.

Dinner will be served on your return to the lodge.

    DAY 3:

This morning, you will be woken before sunrise, enjoy breakfast before check-out formalities.

Next, you will be transferred by road to the port in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. A lunch box will be provided for the 3-hour drive. Delays are expected at the border due to peak season.

  • OVERLAND - KRUGER AND THE PANORAMA ROUTE CODE: DURL31

Look for iconic African animals on game drives through a private game reserve that borders the Kruger National Park and behold some of South Africa’s most glorious scenery on the aptly named Panorama Route.

Special Note: Guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

    DAY 1

Upon disembarkation in Durban, you will be met and transferred to the King Shaka International Airport for a domestic flight to the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. From there, you will take a connecting domestic flight to Hoedspruit.

A lodge representative will meet you at the Hoedspruit airport and accompany you on the road transfer to the Ngala Tented Camp, which lies within the Ngala Private Game Reserve. Chic and contemporary, Ngala Tented Camp is comprised of only nine intimate and luxurious tents, making it an ideal option for a small group. The tented suites are set on raised platforms and cleverly designed to blend into the riverside trees and minimize the impact on the environment. Each handsomely furnished tented suite features an en-suite bathroom, an additional outdoor shower, air conditioning and a private wooden deck.

The nearby guest areas overlook the seasonal Timbavati River and provide a tranquil setting to read or to enjoy a refreshing drink. Be sure to bring the provided Swarovski binoculars just in case a herd of elephants or another animal saunters by. The camp’s lap pool, which follows the contours of the Timbavati riverbank, is another fine spot for afternoon game viewing.

Following check-in at the tented camp, you will have time to freshen up before gathering for tea. You will then head into the reserve on an afternoon game drive that is sure to be intimate, as Ngala Private Game Reserve has exclusive traversing rights over huge expanses of wilderness.

An expert ranger and tracker team will lead the safari to ensure sensitive off-roading practices and close-up sightings of the African wildlife. You may spot the Big Five—lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and Cape buffaloes—as well as giraffes, hyenas and a multitude of birds.

After returning to the lodge, dinner will be served. The remainder of the evening will be on your own.

    DAY 2

Following an early-morning wake-up call, you will be served tea or coffee and biscuits prior to heading into the Ngala Private Game Reserve on a game drive. The reserve shares unfenced borders with Kruger National Park, a wilderness of nearly 5 million acres that is home to more species of large mammals than any other African game reserve. While there is no telling what you will observe, the animals are particularly active in the morning.

Following your morning game drive, you will return to camp for breakfast. The remainder of the morning will be at your leisure. You might relax in your accommodations and lounge around the swimming pool. If you are feeling more ambitious, you may explore the surrounding terrain on a nature walk, free from the constraints of roads and vehicles. During this time, you can observe the abundant bird life, meander along a dry riverbed, relax under a shade tree and follow the tracks of animals such as zebras and giraffes. Few experiences are quite so fulfilling as connecting with the African bush in such an intimate manner.

A big game viewing walk is another option. Led by an expertly trained ranger and tracker team, these walks offer the chance to track and view Big Five animals on foot. Your guides will ensure that the animals are unaware of your presence, so as not to disturb them in their natural habitat.

Other leisure-time possibilities (additional cost) include a rhino-notching conservative experience and a private safari tailor-made to your preferences. You might also indulge in the spa services for an additional cost.

After lunch in the main lodge, you will enjoy an afternoon game drive. You will likely see a variety of animals that are more active later in the day.

Back at the lodge, dinner will be served, after which you will spend another delightful evening.

    DAY 3

Following an early-morning wake-up call, you will be served tea or coffee and biscuits before traveling into the Ngala Private Game Reserve on one last game drive. As each day in the bush is different, you can expect to observe animals that you may not have seen before.

Upon returning to the lodge, breakfast will be served. You will then check out of the lodge and follow the Panorama Route towards the town of White River. A light lunch will be served along the way.

This immensely scenic road in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province connects numerous cultural and natural points of interest. It centers around the Blyde River Canyon, the world's third largest canyon. Thundering waterfalls, pristine forests and natural landmarks are just a few of the features. Specific highlights include the Three Rondawels, Bourkes Luck Potholes, Berlin Falls, Lisbon Falls, Pinnacle Rock and God’s Window.

By late afternoon, you will check into Oliver’s, an elegant boutique hotel overlooking a championship golf course on the White River Country Estate. After dinner at Oliver’s, you will spend the evening.

    DAY 4

After breakfast and leisurely morning, you will transfer to Nelspruit Airport for a flight to Johannesburg’s

O.R. Tambo International Airport. From there, you will connect to a domestic flight to Richard’s Bay.

Upon arrival at Richard’s Bay Airport, you will meet a local representative and transfer to the harbour to re-board the cruise ship.

  • OVERLAND - EASTERN CAPE: PUMBA BUSH LODGE CODE: DURL42

  • OVERLAND - KRUGER SHALATI: TRAIN ON THE BRIDGE CODE: DURL21

Travel to Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s premier reserves, for up to four superb game drive opportunities. Here your chances of seeing the Big Five, Little Five and the Birding Six are excellent as you watch from the comfort of an open air 4x4 vehicle. Spend your leisure time and evenings at the brand new (opening winter 2020) Kruger Shalati: Train on the Bridge – a unique luxury train hotel that is permanently stationed high above the Sabie River where the views in either direction are infinite.

Special Note: Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

    Day 1

Depart Durban Harbor and transfer to King Shaka International Airport for a flight to Skukuza via Johannesburg. On arrival at Skukuza Airport, you are met and transferred to Kruger Shalati

Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest game reserve, was established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African lowveld. With nearly 2 million hectares of land that stretch for 352 kilometres (218 miles) from north to south along the Mozambique border, this wildlife sanctuary is like no other. Its atmosphere is so unique that it allows those who enter its vastness to immerse themselves in the unpredictability and endless wilderness that is the true quality of Africa. Certainly, it ranks with the best in Africa and is the flagship of the country’s national parks - rated as the ultimate safari experience.

This is the land of baobabs, fever trees, knob thorns, marula and mopane trees underneath which lurk the Big Five (buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino), the Little Five (buffalo weaver, elephant shrew, leopard tortoise, ant lion and rhino beetle), the birding Big Six (ground hornbill, kori bustard, lappet-faced vulture, martial eagle, pel’s fishing owl and saddle-bill stork) and more species of mammals than in any other African Game Reserve. Kruger National Park is unrivalled in the diversity of its life forms and a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies.

Your accommodations, the Train on the Bridge is a first-of-its-kind luxury accommodation in a re-envisioned train stationed on the historically rich Selati Bridge above the Sabie River in Kruger National Park. The name has its origins in the history of Chief Warrior Shalati, who lived near this river in the region of Skukuza and ruled over the Tebula tribe.

Kruger Shalati pays homage to the guests who explored the park and Skukuza Camp nearly 100 years ago as this is where the first visits to the iconic park were allowed in the early 1920s. Back then the train would park overnight in the exact spot where Kruger Shalati is positioned.

The large, glass-walled train rooms allow for unsurpassed views along the length of the majestic Sabie River while the style of the train celebrates African design with the use of local art and crafting skills. High above the riverbanks, aligned with the floor level of the train, lies a bespoke deck with pool, offering a swimming experience unlike any other – with crocodile, hippos, buffalos and elephants possibly hanging about only meters below – an experience for guests unlike any other!

After checking in and settling in to your room, gather for afternoon tea, followed by an open vehicle game drive in search of the ‘Big 5’ as well as numerous other wildlife & birdlife.

Return to the hotel and enjoy traditional cuisine at the Bridge House Restaurant before retiring for the evening.

    Day 2

Receive an early morning wake-up call and enjoy tea, coffee and biscuits prior to your morning game drive. Set out for an exciting adventure as your game drive showcase the wildlife and nature of the southern region of Kruger National Park.

Bounded by the Crocodile River in the south and the Sabie River in the north, the southern region is also host to the jagged ridge of the Lebombo Mountains along the border with Mozambique, and the highest point in the park, Khandzalive, in the southwestern. The valleys are home to trees rarely found in other parts of the Kruger park, such as the Cape chestnut, coral tree and lavender fever-berry.

On the whole, there is more wildlife purported to exist in the southern part of the park so whilst you are enjoying the spectacular scenery, you might even spot some or all of the “big five”.

Return to Kruger Shalati where breakfast is served, followed with some time at leisure. Relax in your carriage room, retreat to the lounge carriage with bar or perhaps enjoy its adjacent deck and overhanging pool overlooking the river. It’s the perfect spot for a swim while watching the wildlife roam about beneath you.

Optional activities will be available such as guided walks and helicopter rides. A full list of activities will be available to you once you arrive. Some activities will incur an additional cost payable directly to the hotel.

Following afternoon tea, commence on a late afternoon game drive.

Return from your game drive followed by dinner at the hotel.

    DAY 3:

Receive an early morning wake-up call and enjoy tea, coffee and biscuits prior to your final game drive. After breakfast and check out you will be transferred by road to the port in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. A lunch box will be provided for the drive.

Descend Sani Pass and drive to your hotel which is nestled at the foot of the Pass and on the banks of the Mkhomazana River. Keep on the lookout for wildlife as this area is populated by Eland and other antelope and birdlife.

Enjoy dinner at the hotel and an evening at leisure.

    DAY 2

After breakfast depart for Nambiti Private Game Reserve, travelling through the scenic Southern Drakensburg. You will arrive at the intimate and picturesque Nambiti Hills Lodge in time for lunch.

Located in a malaria-free region in the heart of KwaZulu Natal, the Nambiti Private Game Reserve is the ultimate escape, offering the Big 5. The world-famous elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino and over 40 other animal species roam these reclaimed farms in the heart of the Battlefields area. The reserve boasts a biodiverse landscape featuring riverine scrub, vast savannah, grasslands and thornveld.

Each of the luxury suites offer warm, inviting interiors with natural tones and plush beds. During your free time, enjoy a cold beverage from your private terrace or bathe in complete privacy as you gaze upon the valleys surrounding your suite or retreat to the panoramic pool deck to relax and sip on a refreshing cocktail.

As the afternoon turns into darkness you will set out on a game drive which will surely evoke many emotions as you discover amazing wildlife interactions and search for the BIG 5.

Returning to the lodge, choose to freshen up before dinner or grab a drink at the camp bar and relax in the lounge.

After dinner, gather around the fire-pit to share stories with your guides before retiring to your room.

    DAY 3

After an early morning wake-up call, enjoy coffee, tea and snacks before embarking on a morning safari activity during the cool early light while wildlife is most active.

On this morning game drive, your guide will use their local knowledge of the area taking you to the spots best for game viewing at this time of the day. Using this knowledge, their tracking abilities and of course natures luck, you will find the wildlife you most would like to see.

Return to the lodge for breakfast before departing for the Battlefields.

KwaZulu Natal, also known as KZN, is steeped in history and littered with battlefields from the struggles of the Zulu Civil Wars, to their clashes with the Boers and the British. This picturesque area features sweeping views of rolling hills scattered with rugged rock formations. The most well-known and well-visited sites are those of the legendary Battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift took place on the same day, lodging the Zulus firmly at the top of great warrior nations.

Arrive in the afternoon at the spectacular Fugitives’ Drift property - a Natural Heritage Site, overlooking both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.

Spacious and luxurious en-suite cottages have private verandahs, air-conditioning, and both inside and outside showers. The lodge has a swimming pool, library, and excellent museum. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure or choose to do a nature walk.

Enjoy tea before departing on an afternoon tour of the Rorke’s Drift battlefield.

The battle of Rorke’s Drift is one of the most famous battles in the English-speaking world and was later the subject of the 1964 Hollywood blockbuster, Zulu.

A brave little band of British soldiers, many sick and disabled, held out all night against an overwhelming Zulu force. Hear Douglas Rattray’s emotionally charged talk which covers the battle at Rorke’s Drift through the experiences of the individual soldiers who, through great acts of selflessness and bravery, managed to hold out in the face of such dire odds.

Eleven Victoria Crosses and five Distinguished Conduct Medals were awarded for actions at Rorke’s Drift, restoring British military honor and securing its reputation as one of the most remarkable stands in British military history.

Return to the lodge for dinner and an evening at leisure.

    DAY 4

After an early morning wake-up call, enjoy breakfast before departing on a tour of Isandlwana battlefield.

The stories of the Anglo-Zulu war have endured for almost a century and a half. The epic of Isandlwana was a battle which shook imperial Britain to its core and questioned the illusion of European superiority. How did a force, armed largely with spears and shields, overcome a modern British army?

On the way to Isandlwana, you will listen to a tape narrated by David Rattray which gives a background to the Anglo-Zulu War. There is a stop for a comfort break and to view the museum at Isandlwana. Afterwards, enjoy refreshments while listening to a lecture on the battlefield.

Following this visit, depart with a packed lunch to enjoy en-route to the port of Richards Bay where you will rejoin the ship.

    Local Currency:

The monetary unit of South Africa is the Rand. All major credit cards are accepted at most establishments, although Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted cards.

    Credit cards:

Most international hotels accept most standard credit cards as a payment for your “extras” account.

As a general rule, we would suggest that you allow sufficient local currency to cover the cost of any additional service at hotels, as many of the small lodges and game lodges do not have credit card facilities. MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted, with more limited use placed on American Express and Diners Card.

    Electricity:

South Africa’s electrical systems are 220/230 volts A/C 50 cycles. Most hotels have hair dryers and plug adaptors in the bedrooms. It’s always best if you bring electric appliances, take along an international converter kit complete with a set of adapter plugs. Outlets in Botswana require a three-pronged adapter plug with 3 round prongs.

Be aware, however, that overnight recharging may not be possible where generator use restricts the availability of electricity.
