Land Programs & Hotels

  • Immerse yourself in Peruvian culture and explore Lima’s scenic beauty and history on this four-day program. Visit several historical landmarks, drive through the fashionable suburbs of San Isidro, Barranco and Miraflores, enjoy a demonstration by Peruvian Paso horses at a traditional Hacienda and wander through the pre-Columbian ruins of Pachacamac.

    DAY 1

After flying into Lima International Airport, you will be met by a representative and transferred to your hotel in the Miraflores district, in the heart of Lima. The day is at leisure and meals are on your own.

Hotel check in time is at 3:00pm. Should your flight arrive early in the morning you may wish to book an extra night to ensure that your room is ready upon your arrival. Day rooms can only be requested directly with the hotel.

    DAY 2

After breakfast and check out, proceed to Lima’s main square, where Spanish conqueror Francisco Pizarro founded the “City of Kings” in 1535. The Government Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace and the Lima Cathedral all surround the square. You will visit the cathedral where Pizarro is buried.

Next, you will see the Santo Domingo Convent, the oldest church and convent in Lima. The foundation of Santo Domingo was conceived by Friar Tomas de San Martin, who later served as the Preceptor Prior of the Dominican Order.

Construction began in 1540, and the convent was later renovated to its present neo-classical style in the 18th century. It is a city within a city of sorts, comprised of a succession of cloisters and yards surrounded by service areas and communal rooms. Spanish Saint San Juan Masias is buried in the convent.

Visit a modern home containing the treasures of the Luna Elias-Polo family, who will greet you and show off their extensive collection of Nativity scenes from Peru and all over the world. This is followed by lunch at a local restaurant.

Continue to Museo Amano which houses a valuable collection of textiles from pre-Hispanic civilizations and then travel to the quaint Barranco district where one stately mansion after another comes into view. This area is known for its rich cultural history and artistic atmosphere.

Nearby visit the unique Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of Sighs) where lovers gather for love promises. This iconic wooden pedestrian bridge was built in 1877 out of the necessity to connect both sides of the ravine. Its architecture is simple, yet over time it has become one of the most romantic spots in the city of Lima and an inspiration for numerous legends, songs, and poems.

As this day of discovery comes to an end, return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

    DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will enjoy a picturesque drive to the outskirts of Lima to explore the ruins of Pachacamac. This large excavated pre-Columbian complex of buildings includes an extraordinary pyramid and temples and a highly sophisticated irrigation and reservoir system. Pachacamac may have been the site of an oracle, as pilgrims visited for centuries.

For a more contemporary look at life in the country, you will visit a traditional hacienda where Peruvian Paso horses are bred. Known for its unique high stepping and comfortable gait, the Peruvian Paso horse has become a symbol for the coastal region of Peru. The horses will display their skills as you learn about their origins and uses over lunch.

Upon returning to the hotel, you will enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure. Dinner is included at the hotel.

    DAY 4

After breakfast, settle any incidentals and check out. Meet your guide and transfer to Callao, Peru’s first port. Visit Monumental Callao, which was once one of the spiciest neighborhoods and is now one of the most important landmarks of art and social transformation in Peru. During some free time, visit a gallery or exhibition or perhaps do some last-minute souvenir shopping.

Following your stop here, transfer to the port of Callao where you will embark the ship.

  • Delve into the sacred and mysterious landmarks of the Inca Empire, including the famed Machu Picchu, Lost City of the Incas, and other ancient temples, all important archaeological monuments from the Inca Empire.

    Special Notes:

Please ensure passport details are added to your cruise booking right away so that Machu Picchu entry tickets can be purchased. Please verify the expiry date – passports must be valid for at least six months after travel in order to enter Peru.

As this is an active program that takes place at high altitudes, we strongly recommend that all guests should consult with their physician regarding their ability to participate prior to signing up. This program is not recommended for guests who require the use of a wheelchair or walker due the variety of surfaces required to be navigated. Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below for airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

    DAY 1

After flying into Lima International Airport, you will be met by a representative and transferred to your hotel in the San Isidro district in the heart of Lima.

Should your flight arrive early in the morning you may wish to book an extra night to ensure that your room is ready upon your arrival. Hotel check in time is at 3:00pm. Day rooms must be requested directly with the hotel.

This evening, please re-pack your bags accordingly as luggage storage for excess luggage will be available at the hotel from Day 2 – 5. We suggest bringing a carry-on only for the next few days (keeping in mind rules for liquids/gels etc). Any luggage to be left in storage should be properly labelled with your name and suite number on the ship. Don’t forget to take any valuables, medications and documents with you.

Meals are on own at your leisure today.

    DAY 2

Depending on flight time, enjoy breakfast before transferring to the domestic airport for a flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, get acquainted with the area on a city tour.

Note: please separate any luggage that will not accompany you to Cusco prior to disembarking. It will be stored in Lima where you will be reunited with it on Day 4 when you return to Lima. Please remember to bring any medications, valuables and documents with you. Please make sure that any luggage to be stored is properly tagged with your name and suite number on the ship. We suggest bringing a carry on to Cusco only – keeping in mind restrictions for liquids, gels etc.

After lunch at a local restaurant, visit with the splendid Baroque-style Cusco Cathedral, built in the mid-1500s on the foundations of an Inca palace. Many of the stones used in its construction were looted from the nearby Sacsayhuaman fortress.

Next, visit the sacred site of Koricancha. Here, we will admire the lovely Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo that was built on the foundations of the Temple of the Sun, the most sumptuous temple in the Inca Empire. The curved, mortar-less masonry wall at the west end of the church is one of the greatest existing examples of Inca stonework.

Continuing, the next stop is Sacsayhuaman fortress. Strategically located on a hill overlooking Cusco, the fortress was constructed without mortar like many other Inca structures. Yet the enormous stones (some weighing 200 tons) of the remaining walls fit so tightly that not even a thin blade of grass can slide between them. The craftsmanship is a stunning example of the Inca’s sophisticated construction techniques and architectural skills.

After the visit of the city and sights, check into the Monasterio, a Belmond hotel. Dinner is included at the hotel. Your Deluxe Room is enriched with oxygen to promote better sleep and faster adjustment to the high altitude.

    DAY 3

Following breakfast, you will drive to the train station and board the First Class train. Brunch will be served during the journey, as you take in the spectacular Andean scenery en route to Machu Picchu.

Upon arriving in Aguas Calientes, there is a short walk to the bus station where you will board a transfer bus to the ruins. Enter the site of Machu Picchu where you will explore the famous “Lost City of the Incas.” This citadel in the clouds was constructed as a royal retreat for the Inca emperor Pachacuti in the 1400s but was abandoned less than 100 years later, its population probably devastated by smallpox. Because the Spanish conquistadors never found this hidden city, Bingham discovered it largely intact.

Architectural highlights include the Temple of the Sun, designed much like the one in Cusco, several other temples, hundreds of terraces, and a mysterious carved stone situated on a raised platform that towers above the plaza. This stone may have been used for astronomical observations, but no one knows for certain. The Inca had no written language, so there is no record of Machu Picchu’s ultimate purpose. In fact, scholars are still striving to uncover clues as to its mysteries.

After visiting Machu Picchu, board the Hiram Bingham Train and begin the journey back to the Rio Sagrado Train Station. Dinner is served on board the train. Upon arrival, return to your hotel in Cusco for the night.

Note: Machu Picchu stands at approximately 2,450 m above sea level, and Cuzco at 3,400 m. At these heights, there’s 20 per cent less oxygen in the air. In the vast majority of cases, symptoms of altitude sickness are very mild (a little sleepiness or a slightly foggy head) and wear off after a day or two, but it can make doing anything energetic feel like a struggle. It is recommended that you speak to your physician prior to signing up to discuss any potential side effects based on your medical history. Due to the amount of walking and over uneven terrain and/or steps, this program is not recommended for guests with limited mobility. Should you require use of any mobility aids, you may be required to hire a separate guide in order to assist along the way. Vehicles are not permitted inside the site.

    DAY 4

After breakfast you will be transferred to the Cusco airport for a flight to Lima.

Upon arrival, the group is met and transferred to the port of Lima where you will embark the ship.

Guests will be reunited with any stored luggage once at the port.

Land Program Details Step by Step:

•Please note: The order of sites visited may vary to avoid congestion. This program is subject to flight confirmations which are beyond our control. All program details including timings and any flights indicated below are approximate, given here for general reference purposes and subject to change. Direct flights are never guaranteed.

•Itineraries with the most up to date details (at the time) will be issued when you are emailed your final cruise documents 21 days prior to sailing. You will then receive one last final itinerary from our ground operator with a Welcome Letter upon arrival or at your hotel. Please review that Welcome Letter and your final itinerary carefully for any further amendments.

•The hotels used for your land program will be the hotels listed in this document unless you have been advised otherwise in advance of the land program start date.

•Guests failing to arrive on Day 1 of a scheduled land program will be considered a no-show and their hotel space released.

    Extra Nights

•All extra nights booked through the cruise line are confirmed at the hotel that is used on the FIRST NIGHT of your land program.

•If you book extra nights through the cruise line, you will be met as per the flight details provided and transferred to your hotel. Check-in is 3:00pm (subject to change). Meals other than breakfast, as well as activities, are on your own until day 2 of the program.

•If you have an early-arriving flight, you may wish to book an extra night as your room will not be ready for occupation until approximately 3:00pm.

•If you book extra nights on your own, transfers are not included.

    DAY 1

After arriving at the Lima International Airport, you will transfer to the Country Club Hotel or similar.

Although every effort will be made to have the room available before the 3:00pm check in time, this cannot be guaranteed. If you are arriving early, you may wish to book an extra night to ensure that a room is ready upon your arrival or store your luggage with the Concierge and feel free to use the amenities of the hotel until your room is ready. Day rooms can only be booked directly with the hotel.

    Meet and Greet and transfers

•Final cruise documents will be emailed 21 days prior to sailing. The local ground agent’s telephone number will be on page 1, if you can’t locate the meet-and-greet representative upon arrival. Be aware that the representative may be assisting others and may not be in sight when you first exit Customs and the luggage claim area.

•After arrival controls, please retrieve your luggage and look for your representative within the airport terminal. Look for someone holding a sign with the cruise line logo.

•Meet and greet and transfers are arranged for guests arriving on Day 1 of a land program or for extra nights booked through the cruise line and are arranged based on the flight details received by guests at least 14 days before sailing. Guests arriving independently before the program start date will not have a transfer included.

•After arrival controls, please retrieve your luggage and look for your representative within the airport terminal.

•If we have not received your flight details or your flights have changed, and the Destination Services Land Team has not been notified, then a transfer cannot be provided, and guests will be responsible for getting to the land program hotel at their own expense. Please immediately contact our Reservations Department for any flight changes before departure.

    Expected Weather:

From mid-November until the end of April is considered to be the wet season, with the peak rainfall occurring during January and February. Although it may not rain every day or for even for a few days at a time, there is a significant chance that you will encounter wet weather. Be prepared with appropriate clothing and even an umbrella. Daily temperatures average 18 °C (64 °F)

    What to Bring:

•Comfortable, casual clothing in natural, "breathable" fabrics. Temperatures will change as altitudes and time of day change, so it’s best to bring shorts as well as long trousers, and clothing we can layer. Cathedrals, churches, and other religious sites require conservative dress. Both males and females should cover their arms, legs and shoulders.

•Local standards dictate a neat, clean outfit for dining in restaurants and touring urban areas. For men: long trousers and a shirt with a collar. For ladies: trousers or a knee-length (or longer) skirt with a modest top. Formal clothing is not necessary.

•A sweater or lightweight jacket for the cooler evening temperatures common in highland regions.

•A lightweight (preferably non-plastic) raincoat or poncho; an umbrella.

•Comfortable walking shoes with low or no heels.

•Sunglasses (with a strap), sun block and a sunhat as well as insect repellent.

•Please note that the use of walking sticks is prohibited in Machu Picchu unless they are needed by guests with mobility problems

    Local Currency:

Peru’s currency is the Nuevo Sol (S/.)

    Electricity:

The current is 220 volts AC. In most hotel bathrooms, there is an electrical outlet with 110 volts for electric shavers, but this should not be used for travel irons or hair dryers. Most hotel rooms are equipped with hairdryers. We recommend bringing your own travel adaptor for electronic devices if they do not conform to the above voltage.

Luggage information (subject to change by airlines):

For domestic flights on this program (Lima-Cusco-Lima), it is permitted to check one piece of luggage 23Kg (50 pounds) per person and 1 carry-on of 8Kg (17.5 pounds) per person.

Guests having excess or overweight luggage will be charged upon check in at the airport.

Fees: $90 approx. for overweight luggage (up to 23kg) / $90 for additional bags (cost per piece of luggage up to 23kg)

Excess luggage storage in Lima from Day 1 – 3 is included in the cost of the program. Any luggage to be left in storage should be properly labelled with your name and suite number on the ship. Don’t forget to take any valuables, medications and documents with you.

Guests not wishing to travel with all of their luggage might consider contacting “Luggage Forward” www.luggageforward.com. Phone: 877-231-5131 They can provide the service of shipping luggage from the ship to your home. There is an additional fee for this.

Carriage of Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines on internal flights per airline regulations (subject to change as each airline has their own regulations)

1.Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) - Guests must obtain a Doctor’s Certificate mentioning their medical condition and the need to carry a POC. Further paperwork may be required by the airline.

2.CPAP Machine NOT being used in flight – please advise RSSC at least 95 days before your cruise if you will bring a CPAP on the internal flight(s) used in this land program. Please supply the make, model and battery type.

3.CPAP Machine to be used during flight – same as above + a doctor’s note is required mentioning the need to use the machine during flight.

*Guests are required to bring with them any details from the manufacturer regarding the CPAP specifications. While most modern CPAP machines are FAA-approved for in-flight use, having a copy of your manufacturer’s FAA-approval status will help to quickly clear any confusion that may arise.

    * Failure to provide the above details in a timely manner may result in a denial of this equipment at the airport for which Regent Seven Seas Cruises nor our local ground operator will be responsible for.

*Some hotels do not provide distilled water. While we can certainly request this for you, we cannot guarantee that it will be available. If received in a timely manner, requests will be sent on the final manifest that our ground operators and hotels receive. We highly recommend packing your own supply especially on programs that travel to more remote locations in order to avoid not having it. Please keep in mind the rule for liquids in carry-on bags. Many hotels will charge for distilled water. If there is a fee, this will be added to your hotel incidental account to be paid at check-out. Fees will vary from hotel to hotel.

    Documents and Visa Requirements:

This program takes place within Peru.

A passport that is valid at least 6 months after travel is required

Please check with your local embassy for any visa requirements for your nationality

Passport details will be required to be added to your booking no later than 3 months before travel. Passport details are required for purchase of entry tickets to Machu Picchu. Should we not receive your details in time, there is a risk of tickets selling out and not being available to you. Ticket restrictions are in place by the National site of Machu Picchu and once sold out we are unable to obtain more.

    VERY IMPORTANT

The name on your cruise booking, passport and any visas if required, must all be exactly the same for flight ticket purchase for this program otherwise guests may be denied travel by flight. Please ensure that all documents are identical in spelling to the names provided for your cruise reservation including first, middle and last name. Manifests generated by the cruise line must match your travel documents.

Failure to have the required documents ahead of time will result in denial of travel and guests will have to pay for any expenses incurred in order to not proceed with the program.

The above information is subject to change and serves as a guide only. We would like to take this opportunity to remind all of our guests that it is the ultimate and sole responsibility of the guest to ensure they meet the entry requirements for each destination.

If traveling internationally, the countries you are flying to and/ or connecting through may have different document requirements and as such we encourage you to visit the government and airport websites of every country you will be traveling to throughout the journey to familiarize yourself with their requirements.
