The island of Espiritu Santo is often called Vanuatu’s crown jewel, for good reason. Immaculate beaches and dense rainforest beckon exploration. From the quiet port city of Luganville, head north to the phenomenally clear blue waters of Riri Blue Hole to swim, dive or kayak. Close to 40,000 US military troops were stationed in Luganville during World War II; a small museum displays artifacts from the SS President Coolidge wreck just offshore, sunk by a land mine in 1942 and today a favorite spot for snorkelers and divers.
