Land Programs & Hotels

  • Enjoy one night in Cape Town before flying to the Eastern Cape of South Africa where you will spend two nights at Shamwari’s Bayethe Tented Lodge. Take part in several game drives into the bush where you will enjoy an up-close unobstructed view of Africa’s most iconic animals before returning to Cape Town for one more relaxing evening.

    SHAMWARI GAME RESERVE: Bayethe

“By-ye-ti,” meaning “I salute you,” is the warm African greeting carried on the fresh valley wind at this tented paradise. Allow nature to blanket you in the seductive tented accommodation of Bayethe Lodge. The refined tents are shrouded by rich vegetation, providing privacy and a feeling of seclusion with views of the African bush and include indoor baths and either an indoor or outdoor shower. All suites have their own plunge pool and private minibar.

    Special Notes:

•There are long solid walkways (1 -5-minute walk depending on the tent location) with up to 5 or 6 steps here and there to access each luxury tent.

•Any guests travelling with Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines should read further below about airline stipulations with regards to bringing this equipment on tour.

•Program details and number of game drives subject to change based on flight details

    Day 1

Upon arrival at Cape Town International Airport, you will be met outside the Customs and Immigration area and transferred by private vehicle to your city-based hotel, where you will spend the evening. Lunch and dinner are on your own.

Check in time is at 3:00pm. Should you be arriving sooner, you may wish to book an extra night to guarantee your room availability upon arrival. Otherwise, you are welcome to leave your luggage at Reception and begin using the facilities of the hotel or explore the city.

Your stay is scheduled to be at the Westin Hotel, club level room. With this room type enjoy exclusive access to the Westin Executive Club Lounge situated on the 19th floor, with spectacular views of Cape Town. Daily breakfast, all-day refreshments, business services and facilities and canapés served in the evenings are all included. The hotel is also within close proximity of the popular Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, home to numerous shops, restaurants and entertainment.

    Day 2

After breakfast and checking out of the hotel, you will transfer to the Cape Town International Airport for a domestic flight to Port Elizabeth. On arrival at Port Elizabeth Airport, you will be met and transferred by road to your safari destination. The road transfer will take approximately 1.5 hours.

Depending on the time of arrival, enjoy lunch and then some free time to get acquainted with the lodge before your first game drive.

If lunch is missed due to flight time, gather in the main lodge for afternoon tea after check-in followed by an open-vehicle game drive.

Later, you will return to the lodge for dinner and to spend the evening.

NOTE: Activities and meals on this day are subject to your flight time. Excess luggage will be separated and stored until your return to Cape Town. Please ensure that bags to be stored are labelled with your name and suite number on the ship and don’t forget to bring any valuables, documents and medications with you.

    Day 3

Spend the entire day at Shamwari, where two game drives and all meals are included. In between, relax by the pool, take a nap or perhaps enjoy a treatment at the spa (additional cost).

Game drives are conducted at sunrise and sunset, providing tranquil opportunities for observation. Guests may survey the landscape, observe birds of prey, and potentially view members of the Big 5 from the comfort and safety of open game viewing vehicles. Each safari vehicle is equipped with Swarovski optic binoculars, one per couple, for use during the drive.

The safari guides possess extensive expertise in wildlife and demonstrate a strong commitment to their respective fields so participants can expect to gain valuable insights and a deeper appreciation for Africa through this memorable experience.

    Day 4

After an early morning wakeup call, gather your belongings and complete check-out formalities. Depart the lodge with a breakfast box and transfer to the Port Elizabeth Airport. Check in for a flight to Cape Town.

Upon arrival, a local representative will meet and transfer you to the cruise terminal for embarkation.

Any stored luggage will be brought to the pier.

    Please note:

•The contents and order of activities in this program are subject to change by the lodge management without prior notice, due to the prevailing weather conditions and movement of dangerous wildlife on the reserve.

•Whilst this is a safari area, the animals are wild and so sightings cannot be guaranteed.

•During early morning game drives in open vehicles, it can be a little cool. We recommend that guests take along a windbreaker.

•The roads in the game reserve are gravel. There are also inclines and certain parts of the game-drive can be bumpy. A safari is not recommended for guests with back and neck injuries or if pregnant.

This program is suitable for guests with walking disabilities, providing that a travel companion or spouse accompanies them. Please also note that confirmation would be strictly subject to the availability of accessible rooms at the time of booking.

•Children under 6 years of age are allowed on safari.

•This program is not fully guided. Local representatives will assist you with your transfers however, the program at the lodge and hotel is run solely and at the discretion by the lodge/hotel staff. The flights are not accompanied.

    Expected Weather:

South Africa’s seasons are the reverse of those in the northern hemisphere.

    February

The average high temperature in Cape Town is around 27°C (81°F), while the average low usually drops to 16°C (61°F).

In the Eastern Cape, daytime temperatures are around 30°C (86°F) and drop to 18°C (64°F) at night.

    April

Cape Town marks the beginning of autumn, with temperatures approximately ranging from 10°C (50°F) to 23°C (73°F). The weather should be mild and pleasant.

In the Eastern Cape, daytime temperatures are around 22°C (72°F) and drop to a cooler 11°C (52°F) at night.

    What to Bring:

Comfortable, weather appropriate clothing that can be layered. Trousers and warm fleece tops for cold and rainy days. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, for warmer days. Comfortable walking shoes, camera, charger, swimwear and rain jacket.

    Currency:

The monetary unit of South Africa is the Rand, divided into cents and abbreviated as R and c. All major credit cards are accepted at most establishments, although Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted cards.

    Electricity:

South Africa’s electrical system is 220/230 volts A/C 50 cycles. Most hotels have hair dryers and plug adapters in the bedrooms however we suggest you bring your own travel adapter if you bring electric devices.

    Luggage:

On the flights between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, guests are permitted to check in one piece of luggage at a maximum of 23 kg (50 lbs.) and maximum dimension of 158 cm (62 inches).

Excess luggage (up to two pieces of luggage per person) will be stored in Cape Town while you are on safari. You will be reunited with it either at the pier before you embark or it will be delivered to your suite on the ship. Please pack accordingly for this and limit the luggage you take on the safari to one piece per person.

Overweight or excess bags brought on the flights will be at the expense of the guest.

Passengers are permitted to travel with one piece of hand luggage not exceeding 8 kg (18 lbs.) and a dimension of 56 cm (22 inches) length, 36 cm (14 inches) width and 23 cm (9 inches) height. If the hand luggage does not conform to the specified size, passengers may be denied entry into the departure area or sent back to the check-in counter.

Carriage of Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC) or CPAP breathing machines on internal flights per airline regulations (subject to change as each airline has their own regulations)

1.Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC) - Guests must obtain a Doctor’s Certificate mentioning their medical condition and the need to carry a POC. Further paperwork may be required by the airline. Please advise RSSC of the specifics at least 14 days before sailing.

    2. CPAP Machine NOT being used in flight – please advise RSSC when you make your program booking or at least 90 days before the program starts if you will bring a CPAP on the internal flight(s) used in this land program. Please supply the make, model and battery type.

3.CPAP Machine to be used during flight – same as above + a doctor’s note is required mentioning the need to use the machine during flight.

*Guests are required to bring with them any details from the manufacturer regarding the CPAP specifications. While most modern CPAP machines are FAA-approved for in-flight use, having a copy of your manufacturer’s FAA-approval status will help to quickly clear any confusion that may arise.

    * Failure to provide the above details in a timely manner may result in a denial of this equipment at the airport for which Regent Seven Seas Cruises nor our local ground operator will be responsible for.

*Some hotels do not provide distilled water. While we can certainly request this for you, we cannot guarantee that it will be available. If received in a timely manner, requests will be sent on the final manifest that our ground operators and hotels receive. We highly recommend packing your own supply especially on programs that travel to more remote locations in order to avoid not having it. Please keep in mind the rule for liquids in carry-on bags. Many hotels will charge for distilled water. If there is a fee, this will be added to your hotel incidental account to be paid at check-out. Fees will vary from hotel to hotel.

    Documents and Visa Requirements:

South African Immigrations requires that you have at least two consecutive double-blank pages in your passport, or entry to the country may be denied. Passports should also be valid for more than six months at the time of travel. Please consult your local embassy for any visa requirements pertaining to South Africa for your nationality.

VERY IMPORTANT – The name on your cruise booking, passport and any visas if required, must all be exactly the same for flight ticket purchase otherwise guests may be denied travel by flight. Please ensure that all documents are identical in spelling to the names provided for your cruise reservation including first, middle and last name. Manifests generated by the cruise line must match your travel documents.

Failure to have the required documents ahead of time or incorrect names on flight tickets will result in either denial of travel or ticket re-purchase and guests will be responsible for any fees incurred.

  • Explore beautiful Cape Town, with so much to offer, including Penguin Beach, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Groot Constantia Wine Estate, Stellenbosch Winelands and Table Mountain with your hotel located in the heart of the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.

    DAY 1

Upon arrival into Cape Town, you are met at the airport and transferred by private vehicle to your overnight hotel, located inside the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront – home to so many restaurants, shops and plenty of entertainment – something for everyone including boat cruises (ferries and sunset catamaran cruises), the Big Wheel, Two Oceans Aquarium, Zeitz Mocaa and more.

Check into your hotel on arrival (2:00pm) and spend the remainder of the afternoon and evening at leisure. Any meals are on your own today.

Should you have an early arriving flight, you may wish to book an extra night so that your room is ready for occupation upon arrival. Day rooms can only be purchased directly with the hotel.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, meet your tour guide in the lobby of your hotel and embark on a full day discovery tour.

Start off with a scenic drive past the seaside suburbs of Camp’s Bay, Clifton and Llundudno and onto Hout Bay. Continue over scenic Chapma’s Peak, providing phenomenal photo opportunities. Then onto Boulders Beach to view the African Penguins in their natural habitat.

Thereafter, continue onto Groot Constantia Wine Estate. Groot Constantia wine farm is testimony of how one man’s love for wine established South Africa’s first wine farm in 1685. In a word, their wines are from rich African soil, crafted to perfection. Furthermore, their heritage stands for growth, life and beauty.

During your visit to Groot Constantia, you may explore the original Cape Dutch Manor House; visit the famed Cloete Cellar (the birthplace of Grand Constance) for a self-guided tour and enjoy a wine and chocolate tasting experience. You will also take home a souvenir branded wine glass.

Enjoy a delicious three course lunch at Jonkershuis at Groot Constantia Wine Estate.

Thereafter, embark on a short transfer to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens – acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Few gardens can match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch, against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll through these beautiful gardens. Consider a walk on and over the Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway - a new curved steel and timber bridge that winds and dips its way through and over the trees of the Arboretum. Inspired by a snake skeleton, it is informally called ‘The Boomslang’ (meaning tree snake).

The Walkway takes you from the forest floor into and through the trees and bursts out above the canopy, giving spectacular panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains, Garden and Cape Flats.

Return to your hotel in the late afternoon. Spend the evening at leisure. Dinner is on your own today.

    DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, meet your tour guide in the lobby of your hotel and embark on a full day Winelands discovery tour.

Take a scenic drive to JC Le Roux where the tasting room at the House of J.C. Le Roux offers a range of tastings and specially crafted parings for the most sophisticated of palates - both sweet and dry. Here you will enjoy a cheesecake and sparkling wine pairing.

Next, take a short drive to Muratie Wine Estate located on steep slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain. Here time stands still, and centuries of fascinating stories live on. Immerse yourself in the tastes, the sights, the sounds and the warm welcome of a truly authentic Cape wine farm.

Located in the Knorhoek Valley north of Stellenbosch, Muratie dates back to 1685 when it was granted by Simon van der Stel, then Governor of the Cape of Good Hope, to German soldier Laurens Campher. Through the centuries Muratie, one of the oldest wine estates in South Africa, had several other colourful owners and is currently under the stewardship of the Melck family, who are deeply rooted here.

Their guiding philosophy is to preserve this rich history and cultural heritage and share it with wine lovers from around the world. Equally important, is to build a future legacy of dedication to excellence.

Here you will enjoy estate wines (a variety of white and red wine) followed by a delicious lunch.

Thereafter enjoy free time in the town of Stellenbosch, including an optional visit to Stellenbosch Museum (entry fee). The Stellenbosch Village Museum currently comprises of four houses of historical interest and their gardens.

Each of these beautiful homes represents a different period in the architectural development of Stellenbosch. The houses, their interiors and their gardens have been wonderfully restored, furnished, planted and decorated to illustrate the particular style and taste of the time.

Return to your hotel in the late afternoon. Spend the evening at leisure. Dinner is on your own this evening.

    DAY 4

Following breakfast and check-out formalities, depart the hotel for a drive up Kloof Nek, to the saddle between Table Mountain and Lion's Head, en-route to the Lower Cableway Station. Upon arrival at Lower Table Mountain Road, board a Swiss-engineered rotair cable car, and ascend from the 1,190-foot Valley Station to the 3,477-foot Mountain Station.

The journey from the base to the summit takes just under four minutes and offers spectacular views as the floor of the car rotates 360 degrees during the ascent and descent. From the summit, the natural protected area stretching from Signal Hill to Cape Point has been managed under the custodianship of the National Parks Board.

This area is home to one of the highest concentrations of endemic plant and animal species in any area of its size; its impressive 2,285 plant species are greater in quantity than those of the entire U.K. combined.

Following your visit to Table Mountain, re-board your vehicle for a drive to the cruise terminal where you will embark the ship.

Explore the Belem district and see the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery, an extraordinary example of Portugal's 'Manueline' style of architecture. Once populated by monks, the UNESCO-listed monastery was commissioned by King Manuel I to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s famous voyage to India in 1497.

Time permitting, see Torre de Belém (Belém Tower), one of Lisbon's most iconic buildings and symbolic of Portugal's great Age of Expansion.

Also enjoy a refreshment stop, where you may wish to sample the famous and scrumptious Pastéis de Belém (custard tarts).

Enjoy lunch in Lisbon and later transfer to Evora and check in to your hotel - Convento do Espinhero.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, check out and meet your guide for a journey to the enchanting walled town of Évora which is marked by Roman, Moorish, and Portuguese influences

Situated in the Alentejo region, this historic and architecturally rich town is home to a number of treasures. Cobbled streets tucked behind fortress walls, historic sights, and incredible dining make this UNESCO World Heritage Site (the city itself) a must-see.

During your tour, you will have the opportunity to visit the Cathedral, or Sé, with its fortress-like appearance, as well as the Church of St Francis, which is one of the city's grandest churches after the Cathedral and well known for its blend of Gothic and Moorish styles and the Chapel of the Bones.

Marvel at the fourteen original granite Corinthian columns of the Roman Temple before exploring the Moorish arches and pretty alleyways in the town center. After having ample time on own to enjoy a lunch of local delicacies, a visit will be made to Évora University, the second oldest in the country and noted for its impressive architecture.

This evening, transfer to the Dark Sky Alqueva Observatory. Nestled in the heart of Alentejo, the Alqueva sky offers a breathtaking view, resembling a dark velvet canvas adorned with countless stars. As a certified Dark Sky® Reserve and "Starlight Tourism Destination," this protected area spans over 10,000 square kilometers.

Enjoy your visit to the official Dark Sky Observatory with a professional guide who will lead you through an unforgettable night sky tour. Using powerful telescopes, you will explore constellations, nebulae, star clusters, distant galaxies, planets, comets, binary systems, and colorful stars. The experience provides a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of the universe.

With a glass of local wine in hand, help gather fresh ingredients to prepare an authentic "alentejana" meal over an open fire, learning about local flavors, cheeses, and smoked meats along the way. This hands-on experience culminates in a shared meal, bonding over food, wine, and stories with your hosts.

Return to your hotel where the remainder of the day is at your leisure and dinner is on your own.

    DAY 4

Following breakfast, meet your guide and prepare to immerse yourself in nature during a leisurely trekking experience through the lush forest with the magnificent Serra D’Ossa hills as a backdrop. Get an in-depth look at its extraordinary biodiversity, considered one of the richest in Europe.

Apart from all the fauna and flora that live off the cork trees, do not be surprised to come across a wide variety of wildlife, including boar, mongoose, hares and many species of birds.

After the walking tour, discover the world of Herdade da Maroteira wines on a guided tour of the estate, where you will visit the winery and tasting room. Enjoy a tasting of Maroteira wines, accompanied by Iberian pork ham and cheese.

At the end of the morning, enjoy lunch in a typical Alentejo restaurant, with a traditional menu showcasing the foods of the region, accompanied by Alentejo wines of course!

After lunch, transfer to Lisbon and check in to your hotel – One Palacio da Anunciada.

Note: The walking route of the working farm is easy and mostly flat, however and depending on weather, the path may be muddy as it follows farm tracks.
