The Lesser-Known Gems of the
2028 World Cruise

By: Regent Seven Seas Cruises®

THE EXPERIENCE OF
A LIFETIME

One hundred and thirty-three days. It may sound like a long time, but for experienced world cruisers, that number represents just the right amount of time to sail across the vast Pacific Ocean, three continents, 18 countries, and more than 70 ports of call between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

As you scroll through the ports of call, you are certain to recognize iconic capital cities, from Melbourne to Tokyo, as well as idyllic shores that have been photographed countless times, like Honolulu and Bali. Yet, there may be some destinations on this sailing that you may not be familiar with, such as a tiny South Pacific atoll or the heart of Japan’s Sakishima Islands.

So, let’s take a closer look at seven of the lesser-known gems of the 2028 World Cruise.

Sightseeing aboard the 2028 Regent World Cruise

Alofi, Niue

Alofi, a South Pacific gem, is both one of the world’s smallest independent nations and one of the largest raised coral atolls on earth. Unlike many tropical islands, Niue has no rivers or lakes, which means the surrounding ocean is extraordinarily clear. That makes it a dream spot for snorkeling and diving, with vibrant coral reefs, underwater caves and marine life that’s easy to see even from the surface. Whale sightings are common in season, and you can sometimes hear them from shore.

On land, explore the island’s famous “sea tracks.” This network of marked paths takes you through dense rainforest, down dramatic cliffs, and into secluded coves and swimming holes. It’s a rare opportunity to step straight into nature with hardly another person in sight. The Niue Market is a great stop for authentic souvenirs like kahoa hihi (delicate handmade necklaces) and to sample local delicacies. Try nane, a sweet porridge made from arrowroot, or pitako futi, the Niuean version of banana bread.

Port Denarau, Fiji

Port Denarau, on the western coast of Viti Levu — Fiji’s largest island — is a sleek, modern marina surrounded by resorts, restaurants and shops, making it an easy and comfortable starting point for exploring the best of Fiji. But it’s also the jumping-off spot for something even more spectacular: the postcard-perfect islands of the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups. These sun-drenched archipelagos are famous for their white-sand beaches, crystal-clear lagoons and some of the best snorkeling and island-hopping in the South Pacific.

Penneshaw (Kangaroo Island), Australia

Off the coast of Southern Australia, Penneshaw is your gateway to the wild beauty and rich flavors of Kangaroo Island. Known for its abundant wildlife, you can spot penguins, sea lions, and seals. The island’s unspoiled beaches, rolling countryside and rugged coastlines offer a serene escape, while boutique vineyards, a eucalyptus distillery and the famed Ligurian bee farm provide deliciously local experiences. From sampling lavender scones and craft ciders to taking in panoramic views at Pennington Bay and Penneshaw Lookout, this peaceful port is a true taste of Australia’s wild and wonderful side.

Ishigaki (Sakishima Islands), Japan

Ishigaki is a hidden gem in the Yaeyama Islands — Japan’s southernmost inhabited archipelago. Think postcard-perfect beaches, crystal-clear waters and rich island culture. Snorkel or view vibrant coral reefs in Kabira Bay, hike to panoramic viewpoints like Tamatorizaki Observatory, or take a ferry to nearby islands like Taketomi or Kuroshima, perfect for leisurely bike exploration. Hear traditional folk songs played on the sanshin, and visit Yoneko-yaki Pottery to see artisans crafting colorful Shisa statues. These works are believed to guard homes and bring good luck.

Kodiak, Alaska

Often called "Alaska’s Emerald Isle," Kodiak is rugged, remote and rich in natural beauty. Just 30 miles off the Alaska Peninsula, it’s a haven for outdoor lovers, with dense forests, dramatic coastlines, and world-famous Kodiak bears. Hike scenic trails in Fort Abercrombie State Park, where WWII bunkers meet cliffside views and seabird colonies. Whale sightings are common, and anglers will find prime fishing for salmon and halibut.
